Ben sewed a tarp for winter camping, and it works great! Camping in the snow sure beats a wooden shelter, because you can carve it and make it any shape you want...ours had a spacious sleeping area, complete with a kitchen that included shelves and a loveseat. In the above photo, I am wearing Ben's synthetic down pants that he designed and sewed. With those and a down jacket on, you couldn't feel the cold. It was incredible!
Ben didn't do all the shoveling, it just looks that way. When we shoveled, we tried to cut blocks out of the snow that we then piled up to make walls on the sides.
Ben is in the cooking seat, and across from him (you can't see it in this photo) is the love seat that had arching Adirondack-style backs, and you could look up and see the stars. Sorry we didn't get a pic of the loveseat. Check out those stylish and warm over-booties...
The weather was so great that we actually didn't even need a tarp, no precipitation whatsoever. But, it made for a nice homey sleeping space. The days were probably about 40 degrees and the nights probably got down to about 10 degrees. We slept in zero degree down sleeping bags, so we were all set. We put the bags on top of several layers of pad (combination of foam and thermarest pads) on top of the snow, and it was way more comfortable than being in a wooden shelter.

We hiked a few miles in, set up camp, and had a leisurely evening before setting out on our North Moat Mountain ascent. We were basically camped at the bottom, and the 2.3 miles up were relentless (but, of course, this is the out-of-shape one talking...)
There is a view of Mt. Washington on our way up North Moat. It was the most gorgeous day! Snowshoeing in T-shirts...we each got a sunburn!
Ben always gets the sweaty picture of me summiting...He's already at the top!
